Title: A question that I can't Answer...
Post by: Gambitt on December 26, 2005, 06:54:00 AM
Okay, try and keep up with me here...  My sister-in-law's father-in-law (have I lost you yet?) wants to go to Cuba, specificly to see Havana.

Since he knows we go to Cuba, he asked me about taking a trip to Cuba. Since I have never been to the north end of Cuba, I couldn't be much help, but I told him I know a whole bunch of experts, and would ask some info from them....

So, seeing as he is a "much older" gentleman (late 80's) , I'm wondering where would be the best place for him to stay...  Can he get a really comfortable place right in Havana, (AI) or go with Veradero, and take a tour.

And the tours, is there a lot of walking? or can he do a "coach tour", where they drop you off at the "interesting places". He can get around perfectly well, but too much walking in the heat, would not be good for him.  I want to keep it as simple as possible, and the "private tour" thing is probably not a good fit for him.

Any help would be great, as I would really like to help him out.

 Thanks All!

First of all I think it is great someone in their late 80's wants to go to Cuba.  What does he want to do when he is down there?  If he were to stay in Varadero I would have to say that the Melia Las Americas would be a very good place.  It is a well run hotel as well as resort and there were quite a few older adults there.  We took the day trip to Havana and they drop you off and let you browse at various locations for varying lenghts of time: the longest was probably an hour.  Thereis a free train that runs between Melia LA and the Plaza Americas where you can get cigars, rum, etc.  :ham:

Gambitt I don't know about Havana, I guess Steve is the one to answer that one.

If he goes to Varadero, he can  take one of the many excursions to Havana, one day or overnight etc.

I don't know about his mobility but if he is able to walk around I would suggest the Tryp Peninsula in Varadero.  It's a lovely resort and I know that when we went there was a lot of senior people there.  It seems to be their choice of resort now.  It's a family resort as well, but the layout of it means that you can mix with the families or not, your choice.  The kids have their own section with pool and "bar" and restaurants that are far enough away from the main pool so as not to disturb anyone.

I would say that any of the resorts at the tip of the Peninsula would suit him.  Most of the resorts closer to the town tend to attract the party crowd.  Who knows maybe he would prefer that?

Haven't been to Jibacoa, but it gets rave reviews and is closer to Havana and is a smaller resort, so that might be a better choice.

I would suggest Breezes Jibacoa too.  It's only one hour to Havana.  The resort is easy to get around for people with limited mobility (not sure if it's an issue).  We've been there four times and there's usually been a couple of "older" individuals around - I know there's one gentleman who walks with a cane and his wife who uses a wheelchair, go there twice a year - every year!  The staff are very friendly & helpful and I'm sure he would be fine.

Great Replies!  I will definately suggest the Veradero route, and the Hotels mentioned above.

I knew I could count on everyone here at 7 Days.

 Thanks very much!  :)
