We've just returned form our first visit to Cuba ( Brisas del Caribe , Varadero ) and were completley blown away by it .
Sooooo we are studying now for next year and have whittled it down to two ( for now ) ..either Playa Pesquero ( Guardalavaca) or Iberostar Daiquiri ( Cayo Guillermo ) ..I've read loads of reviews and my head is completley cabbaged by it all   :wi:   ) ..I'd be gratefull for any info you can give me
 TIA
 Liz

Welcome to the board Lizzylobs.  I love that handle      :D

We've been to Playa Pesquero and loved it.

It's a more rural area but you can go into the little towns, either get a taxi or the little train that goes.  There isn't much to see compared to Varadero though.

I haven't been to the Dacquiri but I was down the beach at the Sol.

This is even more remote than the Holguin area because it is the Cayo's.

Shine, is heading back to the Daquiri and she will hopefully pop in and tell you more about it.

The smittys were at the Daquiri in April, so maybe they can help out.

 again welcome to Paradise.

We have been to the Daiquiri twice (last time last November).  Lovely hotel and presently under renovation to reopen mid-December.  We loved it, great beach, great staff, good food.  The only down side is the remoteness.  It's on a strip of beach with 3 other resorts and that's it.  You have to travel back over the causeway to get to any towns (I believe 1.5 hours).

Playa Pesquero would probably suit you more as you could get out and about.  It has a great reputation with lots to do (especially with a 13 year old, we wouldn't know as we travel as a couple, our kids are adults).

Hi. lizzylobs and welcome to Paradise.

Going off resort from the Pesquero is fantastic but, unfortunately, nowhere really is within walking distance.

You can hire a bicycle at the resort and cycle to the nearby village of Melilla.  If you wish to go farther than that you have to hire a scooter, car or go by taxi or take one of the trips on offer.

It took me until my second visit to go off resort, then I gradually built up until I'm off resort every day now.

There are some very nice tours offered from the Playa Pesquero.  One takes you to a sugar cane plantation, and a cigar factory.  It's a great way to see the "real" Cuba.

We found the best way of getting out and about around the Holguin area was to hire a taxi you get to see more as you are not concentrating on driving, I would recommend the jeep safari it's a great day out and you get a go on jet ski a bit of snorkeling and see various points of interest you also get the option of driving the jeep, swimming with dolphins is also worth considering

I have been to the Daiquiri and am heading to the Pesquero in January.  I have to agree with what others said, the Daiquiri is very remote and outside of purchasing tours or renting a car there isn't much to do off the resort.  As much as we loved our visit there, it was only for one week and I don't know if I would want to spend two weeks there especially if I had a 13 year old in tow.  We have been to Varadero and loved it there as we could just hop into town whenever we felt like and we went to Havana.  I am really looking forward to my trip to Holguin and already have plans with my sisters to hire a cab to go into the towns and check things out.  Sadly we are only there for a week and one day is going to be taken up with the wedding so that shortens our time.
