I feel so stupid when it comes to computers, so I'm hoping someone here can help me. Everything was fine with my home computer until Saturday night, when I decided to participate in the Yahoo Chat here and tried to download the required Java Chat.
After about 30 minutes, I got an error message saying it couldn't be installed, so I turned the computer off. Ever since then, I've been unable to connect to the internet. My modem seems to be working and the technical people here at the university say that there's nothing awry in my connection, but I'm still unable to connect to the remote computer.
Yesterday I tried to do some modem diagnostic tests and got a code that said there could be a problem with the modem hardware or motherboard.
What do I do now?
Please help!
:duh:

Start by uninstalling yahoo if you haven't already done so.
Clear your cache and all cookies and run your anti spyware and virus checker.
You've probably already done all of this, and I'm sure that once John gets up he'll give you some more techie things to check.

Hi Laura,
make sure you take the steps that Heather mentioned, the uninstall should set things back to the way that they were.
How do you access the internet, through dialup?
-
Hi, thanks for the advice.
Yes, I access the internet on dial-up to the University.
There doesn't appear to be anything for me to uninstall, nothing shows up under Java nor Yahoo in my programs and software. So I'm thinking nothing got installed.
Clear my cache and cookies? You're speaking with a real computer illiterate here, how do I do that?

open up internet explorer, goto tools - internet options - then about half way down the page is a section called temporary internet files, click on the delete files button, and then check the "delete all offline content" as well, then click ok. depending on how many files are in there it may take a few minutes.
to see if yahoo or java chat is in installed, did you go to control panel - add/remove programs?
-
Thanks John, I shall do that when I get home.
Yes, I went into add/remove programs and didn't see anything that said either Yahoo or Java.

Laura:
Hope that you manage to sort out your computer problems caused by Yahoo.
Hopefully we'll see you around a little later on.
Best of luck!!!
-
Laura, did you get it working?
-
Doubt it, as she didn't report in last evening!!!!!
-
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As you can tell, my home computer is still on the fritz. Off to the computer hospital this weekend I think!
