Title: XP Log-in problem
Post by: Gambitt on November 26, 2006, 09:11:00 AM
A buddy of mine, has a computer running XP, with only one username to log in.

The problem is he's forgotten the password.  I need to get past the login screen, to resetup the computer.  Tried the normal F8 thing, and even holding the delete key, to try to get to the CMOS with no luck.

 Any suggestions?

is he using the user logon screen, or does he do a Control Alt Delete to get onto the computer?
if its control alt delete, try using the administrator account with a blank password (unless that the account that he was using).  Most setups of the workstation do not require a password for the administrator account when you're setting it up.  However if you're using the fast switch screen, then you'll have problems trying to log in with the admin account.

Let me know of that works, in the mean time I'll dig up some more resources.

Thanks John...

I guess if it comes down to it, I can just use a boot disk, and reset it that way.

yeah, look at knoppix, it should do the trick, however READ the guide first, it's a bit tricky.

Not yet, but I haven't had a chance to look at it.

 Hopefully this weekend?
