Title: Central N.B. is going South!
Post by: Milli on September 09, 2005, 08:44:00 AM
:)    Just thought I would bring it to the attention of any N.B board members that we will be able to book vacation packages to Puerto Plata from Fredericton starting March 06. That gives us one more option in this province!    :ham:

Well I for one Like the DR just as much as Cuba, been to the DR twice and Cuba only once so not sure if my views are valid ones...

But I'm glad you people have more options now..  :D

Milli, is this the first time you've been offered Puerta Plata?  I guess we just take it all for granted here in Toronto.

Bulldog, we enjoy the DR as well.  I've been 4 times and John has been 7 times.

A lot of people from NB used to drive into Halifax and leave from here. This will be so much better for those in central NB.

I also like the DR, this will be my third time and hubby's second.

Last year, I know you could go to Varadero and Punta Cana out of Moncton.  I believe this is a first for Fredericton.  I found prices out of Moncton more expensive than Halifax last year but I was looking today and found the prices to Punta Cana on par with Halifax and so Guess What??  I think we may be booking a week at the Royal suites in Grand Palladium Bavaro.  With the crazy gas prices, that would save quite a bit on the trip to Halifax and save an overnite at a hotel.  As for Peurto  Plata, I came across the announcement accidentally on the Fredericton Airport website and the staff at Thomas Cook weren't aware of it and so it hasn't received much promotion---Yet.   That will save them a 4 1/2 hour drive to Halifax.  :6:

Yes, we have had Cuba & Punta cana out of Moncton for a few years now,but here's the kicker- the times are terrible. We leave for PC at 6:15 pm (fine),but coming back the flight leaves at 12:15 that means you would have to be in the lobby by 8AM loosing one complete day .I don't like that idea.If you leave at night then you should return at night. That's my beef.Last year we ended up driving to Halifax to get a better time.I'm not sure if the pop flights are the same haven't gone there yet.I know it's not as nice as PC, but if the price was right I'd take it.

I can see your point Carrottop44.  Those are not great times.  At least in Moncton you are only about a 2 hours drive from Halifax in good weather and so you have that option.
I just checked Yourtraveltickets for flights out of Fredericton in April and the times were similiar to what you quoted for your's out of Moncton.  :(
Fortunately we know these times when we are making our decision.  Those people dealing with Sunwing who are experiencing additional stops and changes in flight times must be really frustrated!

Our flights off the rock aren't any better.  We leave on the 20th @7:20 pm and our return flight leaves the DR @11:35 am so we too lose a whole day.  The bus will most likely pick us up about 8:00 am so we will have to be all checked out before 7:00 so we can have time for breakfast before the bus arrives.  Last year the AT flights left early in the morning both ways so at least you landed in the warm DR @8:30 in the morning and could be at the resort by 10:00 to start enjoying your vacation.

Are you saying that you leave at 7:20pm on the first dat and leave for home 11:35am on the 7th day of your holiday...?

That is BS ! as far as I'm concerend..that makes it 6 days not 7...

It is totally BS .It's 7 nights, but definitely not 7 days.It makes me so mad when I think of all the people getting ripped off I think we will be driving to Halifax even though we live in Moncton. Our flight from here leaves at 6:15pm arrives PC at 11:25 -leaves on departure day at 12;noon.So you miss the first and last day.

Congratulations carrottop, but is that price inclusive of taxes?

Also what are the dates you travel?

We are travelling Mar 26-Apr 2 .The total was $1832.for two-just booked last night.I realize it is only a 3 1/2*,but have read some very good reviews.I don't need all the bells & whistles just a clean room ,beach & food. I thought it was an excellent deal.I believe it is still on and I love the departure  & arrival times since we still have to drive to Moncton when we land.I booked through "your travel ticket" some were $200 more     :sunin:

Just checked it myself and it's now $676 per person, but those taxes at $270 per person are enormous - making it $946 per person now.

I just can't get over those taxes though at $270.  Is that because you are flying to the Dom Rep and not Cuba where I thought the taxes were $202 per person?

Yes,you're right the tax is high, but I don't think it's all tax-fuel charge etc .I haven't check for Cuba to see what was added there. This year we decided to try somewhere else.Do you always go to Cuba??   :9:

Carrottop:

Ever since my retirement I have had a love affair with all things Caribbean one might say.

However since I discovered Cuba it scores over the other islands mainly because of the friendliness of the people.

Not only that but compared to the other islands, with the exception of the DR, it is reasonably priced.

I have been to the DR five times but I just feel far more comfortable in Cuba.

To give you an idea how I feel, when our bus pulled up at the Blau on January 3rd my first words were 'I feel like I've returned home'.

Much as I love Canada, Cuba feels like my second home, particularly when you can get to spend time outside the resorts.

Have a great trip Carrottop44 ... I'll be in POP on April 12 for two glorious weeks (Staying at the Marien Coral Hilton)...leaving out of Fredericton.  This will be my 5th trip to the DR between POP and PUJ ... beautiful country ..considering going to Hawaii next year.
