Title: GoPro HD - Come 'dive' with me! : )
Post by: Pacific State 808 on August 19, 2011, 04:25:31 AM
For a little bit of fun for my next dive trip, today I purchased a GoPro HD Hero. This is a tiny HD digital recorder (42mm x 60mm x 30mm) that records excellent quality HD (1080p = 1920×1080 pixels (16:9), 30 fps, 15 Mbit/s data rate) that you can clip or mount to any part of your Scuba rig and record a complete dive from start to finish. A 32 gig card will record approx 4.5hrs of footage.

The housing that comes with the camera is waterproof to 30 metres, I have upgraded the housing so that it is waterproof to 60 metres and has a flat lens port for sharper images. So, you can all join me on my dives in the Maldives in a few months, I have brought a mount that I can either use on my shoulder or use as a head cam, so you will see what exactly I see whilst I am diving. I'm looking forwards to showing some awesome reefs and dives that are out in the Indian Ocean.

Here is the GoPro website, I think for the size, fantastic image quality, and the absolute bargain cost of the cameras, these are a brilliant little invention that will be seen all over the place.

GoPRo's are awesome.  I had one attached to my surf board and got some amazing footage.  So much fun!

Go Pro's are the greatest!  We took ours ziplining in the summer and my husband mounted it on his helmet, cool footage, especially on the upside down line!  Your battery will run out before a 32GB card, I think the battery lasts about 2.5 hours.
Look forward to your footage!

I had a blast with mine, connected it to my BCD on just a couple of dives, a have pasted a couple of links to some of the footage I got. I have a card I haven't looked at yet but will download over the weekend.

First was a night dive with some feeding Manta's.....

The second I took on a dive on a little reef during the day....

I wasn't sure what to expect from it but it came out pretty good for the cost and size of the camera.

Not sure if you'll see this in time, but I just got a GoPro with the dive housing.  I'm going for a dive this afternoon and wanted to try it out but can't figure out the best way to mount it.  what mount do you use?  Do you use the head strap?  do you mount it on your gear somewhere?  do you just let it dangle off your wrist and use it intermittently?

I fixed mine on my BCD at the waist using a small 3 inch rod of carbon fibre which I brought from the eye of mine website. It worked Ok, I would say hand holding it would be best but I like to take photos and this was the only way I could do both. Love the GoPro, real good fun to use and you get really good results, have fun and let me know how you get on.
Sorry if I didn't get back to you in time.

If you need any pics of the way I fixed mine to my BCD I can post some if it will help.

Well, the brand new gopro dive casing had a hole in it and it flooded within minutes of starting the dive.  I'm going to try and return it to the store, but it ruined the camera as well :(  And, the dive sucked as well.

What a disaster, I hope the store replace the housing and camera for you.

Yup, futureshop replaced it (unusual for them but it was the next day).  There was a piece missing (the button that controls the power supply was missing, leaving a small hole that allowed the water in).

the dive still sucked and i got eaten by mosquitos trying to get into my wetsuit.

Good news they replaced everything.

I was thinking at the time the shop would try and place the blame with you and say that it wasn't sealed correctly....but as there was a part missing then they have no dispute.

Too bad the dive sucked though....unless it's tropical heat, 28 degree water, 30 metre visibility on a pristine reef, I can't be bothered with the hassle of diving any more in my own country....lol
