Weather at Christmas
« on: May 24, 2005, 10:09:00 AM »
After our Mexico catastrophe we are considering taking a quick, extra trip to Cuba over Christmas (just to keep us going until our regular vacation in April - Cuba, of course).
   :D
Just wondering what the weather is like at that time. Would it be better to go to the north or the south coast, or doesn't it make any difference? Any ideas/suggestions are very welcome.

I was in Cayo Coco last year in December returning home just before Christmas.   We hardly had any rain and we had four cloudy dull days.   The temperature did drop somewhat at night though and if I were to go again at this time of year I would definitely take something long sleeved to wear in the evening.

The other problem with the Cayos at this time of year is the wind.    It can be quite strong, also through January as well I believe.   This results is most of the beaches flying red flags, and it did get a little chilly.

It would not put me off returning there again at this time of the year, but it is something that you need to be aware of when making your choice.

Hopefully someone will post who has been to Varadero and Guardalavaca at this time of year.    For myself I think I'd take a chance on the later resort.

lunagirl,

We've been to Varadero in early December.  The weather was fine, temps around 28/29 during the day.  At night it got a little cooler down to about 21, so you might need a light sweater.

The water was cold at this time of year.  The ocean was a little warmer than the pools.  We spent most of our time in the ocean.  The pools were freezing cold and empty.

It's hard to predict what the weather will be like because every year is different.  This year there is supposed to be more tropical storms than last year which might make it a bit cooler and rainy.

I wouldn't say don't go at that time of year, but go expecting it to be a bit cooler than in the summer.  You will still get a lovely tan and still be able to swim in the ocean.

 Hope this helps.

Where were you in Mexico, and what happened?

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Well, this will be a resting vacation - taking a stack of books and sitting watching the waves. We will save our trips and exploring until the April trip. So, taking a cardie to wear in the evening won't be a big deal. As long as it is fairly dry so we can sit outside we will be happy. Glad to hear that the ocean should be warm enough for a dip as we are sea people not pool people. Since I grew up swimming in the North Sea (holidays in Norfolk) I'm pretty hardy when it comes to water!!  :s:
