Vista... More Junk from Microcrap!
« on: December 27, 2006, 12:06:00 PM »
Well, that didn't take long.
Even before consumers have gotten their hands on Microsoft's new and much vaunted Windows Vista operating system comes word that hackers discovered a security flaw in the program.

Users have become accustomed to hearing about problems with Windows products, which have been prone to spyware, viruses, intruders and more.

But Vista was supposed to be different. Microsoft has been trumpeting the product as its most secure ever, a way of thwarting thieves and hackers.

Vista apparently contains a flaw that could let someone take over your computer. But the company insists it's not really a major problem because any hacker seeking to exploit it must have already had access to your PC to take advantage of the hole.

And that would mean literally sitting at the machine itself.

Experts agree the glee with which some Microsoft critics are embracing the news is over the top.

"The bottom line is you couldn't use a vulnerability like this to write a worm or hack a Vista system remotely," claims Mikko Hypponen of security firm F-Secure. "It only has historical significance in that it's the first reported vulnerability that also affects Vista. It's a nonevent in other ways."

He expects the company to release a patch for the problem and notes it can't affect consumers - so far, only businesses have been allowed to buy the new program, which won't get into the hands of average users until the end of January.

"Windows Vista is our most secure platform to date," promises Microsoft's security manager Mike Reavey.

Some experts believe it would be almost impossible to design a completely secure system that's still affordable and runs all applications, and say it was only a matter of time before something surfaced in Vista.

And there could be more. There are reports criminals have already gotten their hands on the product and are tearing it apart looking for vulnerabilities they can exploit.

Microsoft has been plagued by problems with all its flavours of Windows for years and cyber crime - which includes identity theft and stealing secrets off computer networks - has become a huge new income source for thieves all over the world.

They're not likely to give up that cash cow without a fight.
