Where else can we go?
« on: May 24, 2005, 04:22:00 PM »
This is a question for all you Brits and World Travellers out there.

We're looking for ideas for somewhere different to vacation in besides the Caribbean.

I've done the Mediterranean but that was back in the 80's, and I'm sure a lot has changed since then.

Where are the popular spots to go in the Med now?

Greece, Turkey and the Canaries seem to be pretty popular though of course Spain and Majorca still receive a lot of visitors.

My last experience in Majorca in Aug 2001 put me off European destinations.   No beach towels, no pina coladas, no tequila sunrises and it was packed out with Brits in football shirts.  Not only that it cost me more for two weeks than I've ever paid in Cuba.

The food was awful, the rooms small and the matresses on the beds were thin.   The only good thing about the resort (apart from when it was time to come home) was the evening entertainment, which I have to say was superb.

I formed the opinion then only go to holiday resorts which are frequented by Canadians and Americans because they would not stand for some of the awful resorts that we have to put up with in the Mediterranean area.

 Just my opinion.

Heather, this isn't a Med trip, but Mike and I bought ourselves a European train pass a couple of years ago and travelled from London, through the Chunnel, France, the Alps to Vienna with many stops along the way.  We got off whenever we wanted and stayed in some of the most beautiful "hole-in-the-wall" inns.  It was an incredible journey and one we would like to repeat.  It wasn't all that expensive either.

Not the Med, but a friend of my In-Laws was in South Africa for 3 weeks in January.  They recently hosted an evening of slides from her trip...the most beautiful photography I've ever seen! It's high on our list of places to see.

Turkey seems to be the in place in the Med at the moment, or how about the Red Sea Riveria in Egypt, hotels and facilities similar to Caribean, friend has just come back from Shiek El Sharmah and said the snorkeling and diving where out of this world.

South Africa sounds wonderful, it's definately on our list for one day.

The rail pass sounds good too.  How long would we need to do that type of trip?  I only get 2 weeks vacation.     :(

Greece is also on our list.

We've thought about flying to Scotland to visit my family, and booking something from there for a week, and then back to Scotland for a few days before flying home.  Can this be done?

Thanks for all the suggestions, keep them coming.

Santorini is lovely (Greek island) very small and quiet and full of history and charm, it is has a hole in the centre of the island, where a volcano blew up.

Its a picture postcard island, perfect for a week, kept away from Falaraki in Rhodes unless you like lager louts and vomit!!

Crete is nice, Aghios Nikalios is ok, as is stalis and Gouves but keep away from Malia, can be abit like Falaraki.

A personal favourite of mine (Huskypup beat me to it with Santorini - beautiful place)is Cyprus, particularly Paphos.  There's a large selection of 5 star hotels and the food is varied and very good.

I stayed at Alexander the Great, but if you want more of an 'adults only' type resort I would recommend the Athena Royal or the Azia - 5 star luxury all the way!!  :ham:

I was in Cyprus in the 80's, I can't remember the name of the resort but it was a nice 5 star.

Cyprus is beautiful I have to agree.

Hi Heather:

Mike and I did the rail pass vacation in less than two weeks.  I think it was 11 days.

If you're interested, this is the place to start.

Happy to answer any questions about it.
