Just got back today and unless they shape up, we won't be heading to SRH again. You can sure tell that Ignacio is gone as he ran a super ship and I think this new guy is far too concerned with the bottom line and follwing the Cuban way!
Being visit #3 (last one in June 2004 while Ignacio was still there) we went with the usual low expectations (being Cuba) but with great memories of the past two stays there. Well, what a let down.
We requested ground floor in Building 29 because as a multiple cancer survivor, I am now prone to lymphedema and the less walking stairs in the heat, the better. We stayed in 2904 in 2004 and not a complaint.
They put us in Room 2905 - right next door. The air conditioning (if you could call it A/C) was functioning poorly and Madylin in the Concierge Office said they knew about it and were trying to fix it. The water temperatures fluctuated so badly in the shower and this was never experienced before. Worse yet was the water pressure - frankly I pee with more pressure than what was available and again we were told they were working on it The toilet seat was so stained and in my estimation required replacement. Much of the clean linen we got was stained and looked filthy even though it had been laundered.
We asked a number of other people about water pressure and A/C and it seems that just a few of the buildings on the Concierge side of the property were affected. Aren't these the more expensive rooms where you think they'd have things in better shape? Even the ice machine in the Concierge area was broken down and while they acknowledged it, just sluffed it off.
Staff were great and no complaints about the food but the new GM has made a lot of staff reductions.
The grounds were in poor shape compared to our previous two visits and the men's washroom by the disco had a toilet out of order all week and one without a toilet seat. The women's washroom by the disco also had one stall with a missing toilet seat. Maybe they can't buy replacements! They have paper towel dispensers all over the resort and no towels in them and most the electric hand driers on the walls weren't operational. The showers for foot washing when you arrive back from the beach are all non operational and only two of the four worked by the pool bar.
We have never seen as many flies as we did this time. The pool bar and buffet were inundated with them and the only time we saw flies before was when we stayed at Breezes in August 2002 and then not as many as we saw this past week. There were literally hundreds by the pool bar sitting and flying everywhere and thankfully we never became ill as did a British couple we met while there.
Sorry to have to sound like a huge bitch session, however, we were tremendously disappointed at a place we have really loved. We'll be letting the resort know via e-mail and already did via the satisfaction survey.
