I guess airport workers are up to it again at the Varadero airport.  :(   People have been reporting overweight charges, requests for tips, etc. Read this on Debbies board, just in case people are not checking both boards I thought I would mention it here too.   :cool:

This practice needs to be stamped out immediately.   If you are certain that your bags are underweight refuse to pay and ask to see a supervisor if the clerk continues to insist on payment; also check the read out on the scale yourself.
 
 I was fortunate that at the Melia in Cayo Santa Maria they had bathroom scales, so I was able to check the weight of my cases at the hotel before departing for the airport.
 
 I know that Gambitt reported the same practice was happening in Holguin in January.
 
 It needs people to complain in writing to their tour operator as they will have more 'clout' in dealing with this situation by contacting the necessary authorites in Cuba.

We saw it in Holguin on the return trip home.  when I tried to tell the guy behind the counter that it was sporting equipment (free on skyservice) he said No.  We got the supervisor involved, who immediately agreed that the bag of sports equipment was no charge, and pulled it off the scales, much to the dismay of the clerk.
 
 My advise to anyone who runs into this is to hold your ground, and demand to see a supervisor.  You'll either get the supervisor, or the clerk will back down if he knows he's in the wrong.  If there's no supervisor behind the desk, then look for the tour rep who are always going through the lines to make sure everyone is being taken care of.  They can escalate it at that point if required.
