Cloth or Disposable
« on: September 27, 2006, 02:01:00 PM »
If anyone has an answer to this question please reply.  I will be a god mother this November to a baby boy born in the Guardalavaca area of Cuba.  Does anyone know the preference of diapers in Cuba.  I know there are disposables and I also am aware they are very costly.  My Cuban family is poor and in the country area (not city)so I have started to collect cloth diapers with liners and pins.  These are not easy to find, especially those plastic pants that go over the clothes so the babies don't leak everywhere.  All logic tells me that this family would be greatful for cloth diapers to aviod the cost of disposables.  They do have an apartment size washer and spinner, so washing isn't an issue.  I will be asking FnT to confirm when they go in October but would like to send diapers for the birth.  Any thoughts or knowledge of this?????

Your question peaked my curiosity.  I used both disposable and cloth on my babies (my daughter was allergic to the disposable ones, but this was years ago (I'm a grandma now).  But I had a look on the internet and found this website  www.babybestbuy.com  and they seem to have everything needed, diapers, plastic pants etc.
If you need additional items maybe you can get them through this site.  Prices seem reasonable too.

I definitely think cloth diapers are the way to go in Cuba. Hope this helps.

I agree that cloth diapers are the way to go in Cuba.

I've seen diapers hanging out on the clothes lines so I know that they are still being used.

I used cloth for my first born, and disposables for my second.

If you can find diaper liners, they are a god send.  They are little sheets similar to dryer sheets that line the cloth diaper to catch the mess.  Saves on lots of stains.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Thank you ladies, I knew I was on the right track....I work in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit so the cloth diapers and liners have been donated by my boss.  I will also check out the website.  This was not something I really paid attention to during my last visit.  My twins are 6 - hense the reason I never used cloth diapers - I barely had time for my own laundry and as soon as they could they were sitting on the pottie.  I will continue my search.  Have a great day!  :notworthy:

I can answer this one!!!!
In Cuba, when a mother has a baby, she is given 5 meters (I think that is the correct amount) of cloth by the government for free and they make their own diapers with it.  Diana made some beautiful diapers with hers and even stitched in a fancy design in one for "going out".  Good old Freedom Ryder was bouncing little Rocio on her knee when she got a funny look on her face.  Yup, baby pee all over her leg.  The diapers are free.... I did not say they worked very good!!!!  :D    :D    :D

Thus the need for "plastic/vinyl diaper panties".  Absolutely necessary.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!! What a wealth of information on this site.  Rainbow that is excellent info for me.  I have located vinyl panties and will take extra cloth diapers and liners.  When you say diapers are free.....were you referring to just the cloth ones?  Are families given disposables too?    :7:
