Pro Ear Dive Mask
« on: May 12, 2007, 10:44:58 AM »
I was surfing on Ebay, doing my morning look for dive gear, the other day and I found this:

http://www.proear2000.com/index.htm

I'ts a new type of dive mask, that covers your ears, as well as your eyes, and has tubes to the ear cups to equalize the pressure, while keeping your ears dry.

I've always had a problem with collapsing eustation tubes after diving (I go "deaf" after diving, due to pressure imbalance) so I went an checked with Pepi, my dive instructor at adventure divers, and he said that it would be worth a try.  They are also great for people who have problems equalizing their ears.

I just hate wearing a dive hood, even in freezing water, so this will keep the cold water from freezing my brain (it's slow enough already)

So, I ordered it this morning.  I'll post my own product review, as soon as I get a chance to use it!

Finally got to try out my new mask today, and I must say I'm Impressed!

The manufacturer's instructions, say to try out the mask in a confined place, before trying it on a dive, to get used to balancing the air spaces... so into Logan's pool I went.

The mask really did make a difference. The ear cups worked well keeping the water out, and after a few seconds, I was able to equalize either earcup, just by turning my head, and blowing out thru the nose.  With slight pressure on the top edges of the mask, it's easy to clear any water that gets in.

One thing I noticed, that wasn't in the manufacturer's notes, is the improved sence of "balance" you have in the water.  The lower density of having air in the ear canals, instead of water, makes it easier to feel the motion as you move.

Hopefull, I'll get to take it for a real dive this weekend.
