Star Ratings
« on: July 13, 2005, 10:32:00 AM »
I started this in reply to a previous post but realize it is a whole new topic.
:)   What is the exact difference between a 3,4,4.5, 5 star??  Is there some criteria somewhere or is it purely subjective?  I have noticed that even the online travel sites and the actual travel company(Sunquest for example) will differ in the rating. When we were first starting to think of Cuba I frequently heard "Just go no lower than a 4 star and you will be alright".  However, I have come to the conclusion by reading the reviews that 4* is no real guarantee and some 3* get glowing reports.
Melia Las Americas  '05,'12,'12
Iberostar Varadero '06
Paradisius Rio de Oro '06
Sandals Royal Hicacos '07
Playa Pesquero '07 '11
R. Hideaway Ensenachos'08
GBP Ambar '08 '09
GBP El Portillo '10
GBP Cayo Leventado'10

I agree with you.

We were told the same thing, stick with the 4 and 5 stars in Cuba.

I have found that the food doesn't really differ.  The only differences I have found between the lower and higher rated resorts is the amenities offered.

All the rooms are much the same.  The beach is much the same, but the differences seem to be in the pools and restaurants.

The higher rated resorts offer more dining options such as al a cartes and multiple buffets.

The food offered at the buffets and al a cartes is very similar it's just the presentation of the food that is different.

Some of the best holidays we have had were in 3* resorts, probably because they were smaller and more intimate.  You get to know the staff and other guests and it can be very friendly.

If you are into using all the amenities that are on offer at the higher resorts then you get your moneys worth.  We don't, so it really isn't worth it to us.

 Just my opinion of course.

Heather:

I think a lot of emphasis when grading a resort is put on the room and what facilities are contained therein.   Coffee maker, cd player, iron and ironing board, mini fridge, in room safe, bidet, hair dryer all have a large effect on determining the rating of the resort.

Playa Pesquero has 7 a la carte options and 2 buffets.   Melia Cayo Santa Maria only had 1 buffet and 2 a la cartes.  Playa Coco has very little to offer at all apart from 1 buffet and 3 a la cartes.     All three are rated 4 star plus resorts, but the PP is head and shoulders above Playa Coco, I don't think anyone would argue that.   The rooms however have similar amenities and that is why, IMHO, they are rated the same.

I would agree with you to a point.

I look at Sandals/Beaches and if you want a fridge in your room you need to go for the high end room category which costs a fortune.  The basic rooms at Sandals/Beaches are no better than a 3 star resort would offer, in fact some of the 3 stars have better rooms.
