Mayan Riviera
« on: October 02, 2007, 10:11:48 AM »
:sunny: I am still looking for a destination for a week the end of October or the first half of November.  There are a couple of resorts on the Mayan Riviera which are coming up at a very good price---Gran Bahia Tallum and Coba.  I think we might be stepping out of our "safe zone" to try out Mexico and so I have been researching on the boards.  Since a group of you just returned from Cozumel could you tell me what to take for currency--American or Canadian? Did you change over any currency into Mexican before you left or can you do it at the resort as in Cuba?   I expect I will have lots more questions if and when I press the Confirm button!

Milli, the last time we went to Mexico I think we took Canadian, US and Mexican. We stayed at the Palladium and we could change our money at the resort. If memory serves me right, would could only us Mexican currency while on the resort. While off the resort we could use US or Mexican. This time I am bringing Mexican and US for sure. I was thinking about the Cdn $ question myself while I was walking to work this morning.

I know the Cozumel gang will be able to answer it.

If you are flying through Toronto, I think there is a money change place in the terminal that you may be able to convert some money so that you have a few pecos in your pocket when you arrive.

One other thing, are you aware that Coba is not directly on the beach? It is the newer addition to Bahia, but not beachfront. Don't know if that is a consideration for you or not.

4 more sleeps for me.

:sunny: bmnichol :  Thanks for that info on Currency.  Yes, I am aware that the Coba is not on the beach and I was OK with that but just now am reading that you really need beach shoes for swimming due to the sharp rocks on the bottom and I hate wearing beach shoes!!  I have been reading about the resort you are going to and am liking what I am reading!  Do you know what the  swimming is like there as far as rocky bottom?   I will be looking forward to your thoughts on this resort when you return.

milli, I took USD with me to Cozumel. Even though our dollar was at par with the US, in Mexico, the USD is still the mighty buck. The exchange for CDN to pesos didn't reflect that we were at par with the USD.
I didn't take any pesos with me, but I did use the ATM's to get some and used pesos and dollars. Our resort accepted both USD & pesos (not sure about cdn cuz I didn't try to use any)

I really enjoyed Mexico and will definitely go back.
