From their website.....
Quote
Sporting equipment we do not carry (effective from 6 November 2007)
Due to the large size and handling complexities, some sporting equipment cannot be accommodated through the airport baggage system or within the aircraft hold. Therefore we no longer accept the following equipment at check-in as part of your sporting equipment allowance.

hang gliders
windsurfing boards and sails
surfboards
kayaks or canoes
pole vaults
javelins
Please contact your local freight company to arrange carriage for any items that exceed the permitted weight and size.

DAMN!!!
how the hell am I going to get my Hang glider to the UK now????

British Airways announces new baggage policy

starting November 6, 2007

British Airways will be introducing a revised checked baggage policy on November 6, 2007. The new policy was partially introduced in February to give customers and BA staff sufficient time to familiarise themselves with the changes.

Following a review, BA will be significantly reducing excess bag charges, announcing a heavy bag charge to be implemented November 2008, and clarifying the specific sporting goods that may be carried for free carriage.

Key changes are outlined as follows:

Excess Baggage Rates

Excess baggage charges will be significantly reduced. Travellers will benefit from a 20% discount if they pre-pay excess baggage charges online at ba.com.

Revised online excess baggage rates (with 20% discount) will be:
- UK domestic flights $32/£16 one-way, per bag
- All other short haul $48/£24 one-way, per bag
- Long haul $120/£60 one-way, per bag

Travellers paying excess baggage charges at the airport will pay:
- UK domestic $40/£20 one-way, per bag (previously $55)
- All other short haul $60/£30 one-way, per bag (previously $110)
- Long haul $150/£75 one-way, per bag (previously $220)

BA will continue to offer flexibility for customers who are unable to carry one bag, provided they remain within the 51lb (23kg) weight limit.

Heavy Bag Charge - November 2008

From November 2008, British Airways will introduce a 'heavy bag charge' of $50 (£25) for any bag weighing between 51 lbs (23kg) and 70lbs (32kg). Until then, the airline will continue to maintain a weight guideline of 51lbs (23kg), but will accept bags weighing up to 70lbs (32kg) at no additional charge. BA will not accept bags heavier than 70lbs (32kg).

Sporting Equipment

Travellers will continue to be able to take sporting equipment, such as golf bags and skis for free in addition to their normal personal baggage allowance. To make it easier for passengers to understand what they can and cannot check in, BA has redefined the list of sporting equipment.
