Air Canada will lay off about 2,900 of its 23,000 employees and cut routes to Europe and the Far East because of rising fuel costs and fewer passengers, the airline announced.

The total number of mechanics and ramp workers, which include baggage handlers, will be cut by about 1,390 across Canada. Layoffs will also include 220 pilots, 440 flight attendants, 425 ticket agents and 265 managers and clerks. Flights to Athens, Lisbon, Madrid, Bombay and Singapore will be cut and the airline will sell some aircraft and close its Halifax, Nova Scotia, maintenance base. Most of the cuts will be made before February.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
