Toronto Pearson airport, Canada's biggest, to raise passenger fee by $5 as it cuts costs

TORONTO — Passengers are going to face another round of fee increases at Toronto Pearson International Airport, but that doesn't necessarily mean the rest of the country's major travel hubs will follow its lead.

On Friday, the not-for-profit Greater Toronto Airports Authority raised its airport improvement fee by $5 to $25 per departing passenger on June 1. The airport operator cited the struggling economy for the move.

However, airports in Montreal and Vancouver both said they aren't planning to boost their charges any time soon, even though they're facing similar economic challenges.

In the past, Canada's largest airports have hiked various fees to help pay for expansion projects and infrastructure upgrades, but the changing economic climate has Pearson raising them for different reasons.

The moves are "in light of the current economic climate, which has resulted in projections for a downturn in passenger traffic," the authority said.

"Transport Canada's passenger volume forecasts are now anticipating a 5.8 per cent reduction, which translates to roughly 1.8 million fewer trips through Toronto Pearson this year."

Of course they're only doing it to departing passengers...  As anyone who's walked from thier plane to the immigration booths knows, nobody actually lands in Toronto.  You really land in Hamilton, and walk the rest of the way to Pearson!

this is what Pearson is marking it up by, but by the time your travel agent puts it on your ticket it's almost double.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Good luck on the trip actually happening!  I have always wanted to go since I've heard so many people enjoy it...not just for the gambling but for the shows and the various places nearby.  Be sure you don't travel in the summer as it can be very hot, so I'm told.  TC

I'm not a big gambler so it's not that, just always wanted to go and thought why not go for it.
The person I was thinking of taking isn't able to go, so that throw a loop into the plan. I was
thinking of next Sunday, wouldn`t want to go when it's too hot either  :sunny:

But going alone to Vegas isn't that appealing  :dontknow:

I only play the quarter slot machines....and then only until my $30 dollars/day runs out.

No, Vegas would not be as good to visit alone, I think.  It's a fun city and should be experienced with someone else.  Wait until you can go with a friend!  A gf and I went to Atlantic City several years ago and had a blast.  TC

When we went to Cozumel in November we connected in Toronto. When we finally got to the gate for our Cozumel departure I told hubby that if we had to walk any further we wouldn't have needed a plane because we would have been in Mexico! You have to understand where we are coming from, we can see from one end of our airport to the other if there are no booths in the way.
