Medical travel insurance important for longer flights
« on: February 21, 2009, 12:53:59 PM »
Travel insurance for people with pre-existing medical conditions could become more important in the future as flights get longer and holidaymakers get older.

That is because there will be more medical problems encountered on planes as patients with long-term conditions come to travel more, according to a review in the Lancet.

Writing in the medical journal, Dr Mark Gendreau, of the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Massachusetts, US and colleagues explained that inflight medical emergencies are becoming more frequent.

They explained that new aircraft are capable of flight times up to 20 hours, which can cause environmental and physiological problems for travellers with underlying medical conditions.

Concluding, the researchers suggested that a "clear understanding" of the medical issues surrounding commercial flights is much more important in the modern era.

"Individuals need to be aware of the possible medical complications of air travel and physicians should identify people at potential risk from air travel and advise them of any necessary treatments to travel safely," they added.

Earlier this month, Australian travel expert, Dr Deb Mills told website 6minutes.com.au that GPs should help patients to apply for their medical travel insurance and go through the small-print with them.
