Travel Industry Council has a great track record: CATO
« on: April 23, 2009, 12:39:21 AM »
The media and politicians seem to have overlooked the excellent track record of the Travel Industry Council of Ontario, says CATO chair, Jeff Element. “TICO has overseen the industry for 12 years and there have been very few failures in the industry,” he said. “This is because TICO works with registrants to keep them on side with their financial requirements under the Travel Act, or it has closed companies in an orderly fashion, with the least disruption possible.”
“What has been completely overlooked in all the criticism of TICO is that Ontario consumers who purchased their holiday from a TICO-registered agent or supplier are protected by TICO, and recover their money. Return flights have been arranged and paid for by TICO. This would not be the case if they had not booked through an Ontario registrant, and are from other provinces that do not have consumer protection in place for
travellers.”
Element says this clearly points to the need for more consumer protection in the unregulated provinces, or a national scheme to cover all travellers. The Canadian Association of Tour Operators was one of the founding groups behind the Travel Industry Council of Ontario 12 years ago, and has representatives on the TICO board of directors, along with broad representation from other sectors of the industry, as well as the public and the provincial government. CATO represents the majority of the major tour operators in Canada. (http://www.cato.ca)
