The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) has reduced landing fees and terminal charges at Toronto Pearson International Airport, which according to officials, will result in estimated savings of $58.4 million to the airline industry next year. Effective Jan. 1, 2010, landing fees and terminal charges will be reduced by 10%. These fees are charged to airlines at Toronto Pearson, for the airport authority to cover the cost of operating and maintaining the airport. Cumulatively, since 2007, the GTAA has worked to reduce landing fees by 13.1% and terminal charges by 15%.
Air Canada and WestJet both applauded the move and the GTAA’s willingness to pass along savings to its airline partners. Whether the savings will be passed on to the travelling public is unknown. It is up to individual airlines to decide whether or not to reduce ticket prices or other service fees.
