Egg card

Looks like MBNA are making a bid for Egg credit card , Egg cards are currently accepted in Cuba if MBNA are successful it looks like Egg credit cards will no longer be accepted

Thanks Garin for that.   I take my Credit Card to Cuba solely as a back up and would only use it in an emergency, and as I don't possess a card from either of these two institutions it would not affect me anyway.

I know a lot of Brits, in the past, have been confused about which Credit cards will be accepted in Cuba and you are bang on in saying that at present any card issued by HSBC will not be accepted, so that if this take over does take place it will be the case of another credit card biting the dust as far as Cuban use is concerned anyway.

I'm thinking of Cuba for December and I think one of the things that is putting me off is the money issue.  Am I correct in thinking that you have to be really careful which travellers cheques you take.  You can't take any issued by American Express.

I normally take a small amount in sterling travellers cheques as a back up and the rest in cash. Unfortunately my Bank issue American Express T/Chqs.

Is getting cash at the airport simple?

We exchanged cash at the airport and at the hotel without any problems, the rate is slightly better at hte airport, there is a extra charge for T/C, we took a credit cards (non US affiliated) as back up but never used them.

We took £20 and €50 notes these notes were in good condition (no rips or marks) and there was no problems at all.

I follow the principle that Cash is King in Cuba.  A lot of the modern hotels have free in room safes so you can keep your money in there and take out what you require each day.

It is better to change your money at the airport as there is no commission but it really isn't that big a saving unless you are changing considerable amounts of money.

I would never bother with traveller's cheques.  I know the Varadero airport change wouldn't change someone's whilst I was there but the Santa Clara one did, but to me I really can't see the point of taking them.

Stick to cash but do try to make sure you carry a UK bank Credit Card just as a back up.

Sunluvr probably turned that room upside down trying to find your hidden stash    :rof:

You'll probably need new furniture in the room next time you go.  The mattress was shredded, the chairs ripped apart, the floor boards lifted, but I'll bet she didn't think of the refrigerated safe.     :rof:    :rof:
