Lobster - How do you eat it???
« on: June 14, 2005, 12:09:00 PM »
As a poorly lowly paid civil servant!! I have never tasted Lobster before, does it taste like crab or prawns.

And most importantly How do you eat it?, don't want to embaress myself.
ife is not measured by the breaths that we take, but by the things in life that take our breath away.

Huskypup,

I had the same dilemna not too long ago.  I have tasted lobster before but it was always cut up in a pasta or something similar.

It does taste a little like crab almost the same texture.

If it is cooked properly it is very tender, if not it can be very dry and stringy.

How to eat it?  Just crack it open and pull the meat out.  I haven't found a delicate way of eating it, I usually end up with it flying everywhere.     :D

:)  I love lobster and definitely prefer our cold water lobster.  I prefer eating lobster at home or outside as the juice can be messy!!.  In a restaurant it will usually be served already cracked and so you just have to pull it open and dig or pull out the meat.  They also give you a bib!  I prefer the meat in the claws which kind of had me baffled in Cuba as I did not know that the warm water ones don't have them.  Hope you enjoy them as much as I do  :1:

huskypup:  Ummmmm lobster.  I love lobster tails with hot garlic butter and a nice strip sirloin on the side.

I found in Cuba they don't crack the lobster before they serve it.  Unfortunately I had it only a couple of times because I was dressed up in my best duds and didn't want to leave covered in lobster.

Milli, I asked this question some time ago and have never had an answer.

Do you still have the Sunday church suppers on the east coast?  They were the best and a huge tourist draw.  When I used to go (mid 70s), you could get piles of lobster, mashed potatoes, etc., etc. for $5.00.  Unbelieveably good!

Huskypup:

The only time i have eaten loster I have to admit is in Cuba.

I had it (lobster that is!!!) three times whilst I stayed at Brisas and twice more recently at the PP.

I quite liked it I have to say and it made a change. but given the choice between lobster and a good old Albertan steak, there would only be one winner I'm afraid, and it wouldn't be the lobster.

:)   :)  Millibess--Yes they still have the lobster dinners.  They have them on PEI and the churches (esp. those on the coast) have them. I am not sure of the cost now, probably more like 15-20 dollars but that is with lots of good, home cooked food and desserts.  I don't go to them as I find lobster so messy to eat and when we have it we like to pig out on it and have one big feast of mainly lobster, a salad, rolls, more lobster. We try to do this once a lobster season which is right now.  The next time I see a dinner advertised I'll take note of the price.  :s:

Thanks Gambitt for that link.  I've read it once but have saved it in my favourites so I can study it at a later date.

I've never really known how it 'should be done' so after careful study of that site if I'm ever presented with a whole lobster hopefully I won't be waiting to see how everyone else tackles it before attempting it myself.

Problem is I'll have probably forgotten all I learned next time lobster is on the menu!!

I too have dined on lobster in Cuba but it is nothing like Atlantic Lobster. The Atlantic Lobster or cold water as stated earlier in this thread, I find, is much sweeter tasting. Also the lobster in Cuba is quite different not only in taste, but also appearance. These lobsters do not have any claws, like the Atlantic lobster do. I know that I have a picture of the lobsters we had on the fishing boat (on this site), and you can see there are no claws.

I like the different tastes, but my preference is the Atlantic lobster.

Tried something new while in Vancouver last week - raw Oysters on the half shell. Pretty darn fine - especially with the wine!

One thing for sure, do not feel embarassed while eating lobster. Even in the finest dining establishments they provide you with a bib (really). A nice white one with a big picture of a lobster on it - LOL - this way, everyone in the place knows that you are soon going to enjoy a Lobster dinner.

Lobster is very expensive unless you can get it at the warf and then it is still dear considering the amount of meat in them. I did learn something kind of interesting last year from a friend of my mother.  She grew up in St. John which is on the Bay of Fundy and their lobsters are nice and big.  When she was growing up in the 40's they used to close their windows and doors when cooking Lobster as it was considered at that time to be "Poor Man's Food"!  Things do change  :)    :)
