Personal DVD Player
« on: October 21, 2005, 11:27:00 AM »
My daughter wants to take her small DVD player to Cuba when we go in January.

Does anyone know if this is allowed?

If so, is there a restriction on the number of DVDs she can take with her?

I understand from previous readings that they are permitted as well as MP3 players. I bet Steve would be the one to ask regarding restrictions on number of CD's!
I have heard of a lot of people that burn CD's and leave them behind when they leave! That would sure eliminate the need for as many CD's!

But Millybess is talking about a DVD player not a CD player.  I don't think they are allowed.  I have read posts where people have brought them and got them through customs, but some are confiscated.  I wouldn't take the chance.  Maybe because it is a portable DVD player it's ok.

Can anybody shed some light on this?

Thanks everyone.  I guess she'll be leaving it at home unless anybody else has anything different to add.  I was hoping there wouldn't be a restriction on a "personal" DVD player, but I guess one's the same as the other!

Hmmm ... very good question Millybess. I probably wouldn't have thought of asking and brought it along ... yikes!

What about my VHS video camera .. is that on their list of exclusions also ... can't seem to find it on there.  I've always taken it everywhere when I go South ... does anybody know if they have a different rule in Cuba?    :t:

That's also a good question Airborne.  On Milli's link it lists video equipment of all types.  But I think I've seen video cameras in Cuba before.    So maybe it's hit and miss.  But I wouldn't want to take the chance.

:)     I found this response elsewhere.  I think this is a very good question as these electronic items become more popular:

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Standalone DVD players (and VCR units) have been prohibited for quite some time now. A DVD player with the large 7” viewing screen might make it through being seen as an ulta-portable laptop, but personally, I wouldn’t risk it.

Prohibited and restricted items can be left at Customs, but picking them up when you leave is never a sure thing. Items tend to get “misplaced” and by the time they’re “almost found” you’re in danger of missing your flight. It’s a scam that’s becoming more and more prevalent, especially with electronics that can be easily sold on the black market for big bucks...

If you want to watch DVD movies while you’re there, bring a laptop. That’s the only sure-fire way of getting a DVD player into the country.

 Cheers,
 Terry

That's okay Debbie.  If I had the week that you've had PLUS trying to get ready for St. Louis, I'd be sitting around with my eyes crossed!

But this will fix it!  :shop:

Milli, thank you sooooo much.  I think for me, this helps make the final decision.

No DVD player. I know on Canjet you can rent them for $10 for the trip; maybe Sunwing will do the same.

Hopefully this will encourage them to socialize.  :D
