First time to Cuba
« on: January 04, 2006, 09:18:00 AM »
My intial search for a Cuban holiday is only giving me the choice of flying to Varadero on my chosen dates. I would need to change my holiday dates to fly to Holguin.  I had hoped to go to Playa Pesquero.

Has anyone any suggestions for nice hotels in the Varadero area.  We tend to be more pool people than beach but do spend some time on the beach.

 WISH LIST

 Nice Pool area
 Good beach.
 Clean, comfortable rooms
Good food and a choice of restaurants.
 Good standard of entertainment.

Not too much to ask for I hope!!  You can see why the Playa Pesqeuro appealed.

I would recommend the Tryp Peninsula, or either of the two Sandals properties.

I've heard the Paradisus is nice but I haven't been there.

Varadero beach is awesome so you'll have a nice beach no matter what resort you stay at.  Most of the newer resorts have great pools, good food and nice rooms.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

JJay: From what I have seen on the outside and from the reviews I don't think you would go wrong with any of the resorts Flopnfly mentioned.  We are going to Iberostar Varadero which is a little over a year old and getting excellent reviews on a couple of the travel sites as well as from people I know who have been there. We stayed at Meli Las Americas last April and I would recommend it to anyone.  The pool areas were very nice.  Have fun choosing!

My parents are going to the Barcelo Marina Palace next month.  The photos and the reviews look good.  It's a new 5* that opened last year.  The photos show a huge pool complete with waterslide.

Thanks for the info.  Tryp Peninsular looks nice and reviews all seem favourable.  Only problem is the price at the moment is expensive £1005 pp for two weeks.  It would appear the prices for Cuba have shot up over the last few years.  I'll just have to keep my eye on the prices.

Could be an expensive year as we may have to change our car.  Our 4x4 has a so far undiagnosed problem, but sounding like major work required and we're thinking it may be more cost effective to trade it in and get a new one.

This year's holiday may be chosen on price.  But I'll certainly keep my eye on the Tryp Peninsular as it seems to tick all the boxes and is available via my normal tour operator and on the date required.  Thanks everyone.

First choice and Thomson have had some good prices out of Manchester,  First choice have better legroom with the new planes on longhaul flights, It seems prices have gone up during the summer season because Cuba is becoming more popular with people in the UK

I agree about the First Choice legroom.  We travelled with them in December and there was ample leg room even for our friend who is 6 foot 4.  I use Eclipse Direct which is the internet arm of First Choice so the prices tend to be a little less.

The new car is now sitting on the drive, so it will be a case of waiting for the holiday price to be right.
