« on: February 27, 2006, 07:37:00 PM »
I know a few members have stayed at the BCV and I would like to know if I will need a converter or can I just plug in my electric gadgets... I have a converter but if I don't need I don't want to take it
Thanks....... only 32 days to go  :7:

There are two types of converters.  The basic cheap converters that you can buy in Walmart are suitable for high-wattage appliances that dissipate heat.  I have had trouble with my hair appliance because it is low-wattage.

Electronics and other low-wattage appliances require a transformer which can be purchased at The Source for about $50.

Many things such as computers will accept 220v but make sure you check your power supply before plugging it in.

Mrsd:

Your 110 volt appliances will just 'fry' if you plug them into the sockets at the Blau which, in common with most modern Cuban hotels, are 220 volts.

You will need an converter, but even that is not guaranteed to work, as Millybess says.   Debmich purchased one from WalMart for around $20 but it just did not work at the Blau.

In the UK we are on 240 volts so we only need a simple adapter to plug into the sockets and all our appliances work fine.

I'm taking this set of curling tongs over to Debmich on Saturday, along with an adapter, so next visit to Cuba she will have no problem with her hair.

This is the post that Debmich made when she bought the Walmart converter:

So after research, it was discovered that the other/Radio Shack converter I had would only work on appliances up to  50 watts, so I went to Walmart the other day and bought a converter for $19.96.  It is made by Conair and works on appliances up to 1875 watts.  It was beside the dryers and curling irons on the bottoms shelf! Hope this helps out anyone who has a converter question.

and here are the photos she took of it:

After all that - it didn't work!!!

Nice to hear from you again Cookster.

Hope you also enjoy your June trip to the Pesquero.

Doubt if I'll be there at that time though as I enjoy my UK summer of sport far too much.
