HAVANA, Cuba (AFP): Cuban researchers have discovered the remains of an American boat from the 1898 Spanish-American War in waters off the southeastern coast of Cuba, officials said.
The boat was at a depth of 2.5 meters (eight feet) off the coast near Santiago de Cuba, Cuba's second city, some 950 kilometers (590 miles) east of Havana, said Experimental Center for Ecosystems and Biodiversity director Nicasio Vina.
The submerged remains are those of a US cargo steamship 32.5 meters (107 feet) long by eight meters (26 feet) wide that was used to ferry coal during the war, he said.
Along with the steamship, divers also found kitchen utensils, brass nails and the ship's anchor and chain, all in very good condition.
The Spanish-American war was fought in Cuba between April and August 1898. While defending US interests from Spanish rule, the United States ended Spain's control over colonies in the Caribbean, South America and Asia.
