Microsoft Antispyware
« on: May 05, 2005, 04:58:00 PM »
Hi all,

 for those who haven't tried this, here is the link to Microsoft's new free Antispyware beta offering...gets rid of those pesky little advert spy programs self-installed to take you to advertisement sites, collect your surfing actions and sends them to 'the mother-site' and which basicly slow down your puter;

   http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

 I run Adaware and a couple of other trojan removers and this new one from Microsoft got rid of another 10 trojans off of my puter...it's back to running as fast as ever...    :)

 Free download, fast install, free for awhile.   :)

 cheers
 flygt

I've been using the beta version of this for the past few months now, and it's working quite well.  Well worth the download if you're having problems.

 I too found it to remove a number of items that spybot and Adaware missed.

 From what I've been reading from Microsoft, when they release the final version, it will continue to be a freebie for personal use, but there will be a cost for businesses with more than 10 users.

I've loaded it also thanks to flygt's recommendations, running it alongside Ad-Aware and AVG 7.0 Free edition.

 So far nothing untoward has been detected.   It seems to scan the system reasonably quickly unlike AVG which takes around 45 minutes.   I appreciate that AVG is doing a different type of scan but 45 minutes for a full scan does seem a long time to me.   However if it's doing it's job thoroughly it has to be worth it.

I just noticed this morning that they are forcing an update of the program down that brings it to the next pre-release version.  If you have the program make sure that you run this update, otherwise the program will stop functioning partway through July.  This is still beta, but is also still one of the better programs that I've run across for antispyware.  The UPdate is worthwhile.

Yea, I've been running it for several months now and it's great. Put the new download in yesterday and it's shown as being good till the end of 2005 when I presume the final release will be ready.

 Definately worth it.

It isn't to bad at all....however it has a big draw back.  When someone accepts something as being 'safe' it reports it back to microsoft.  They then have a big safe/unsafe board.  If 80 people say a piece of spyware is safe...like hotbar...and 79 say unsafe....it's classed as safe and won't be picked up.  I hear on the grape vine they are working on it
