Since several of us, have had trouble getting avatars to work here, I'll post this for those that need help, and for those that will come later.
Here we go...
1) your avatar picutre has to be stored on a website, and you need the URL of the picture. It can't be just on your computer.
2) when you click on My profile, you will see a line that says "Your Picture". This is a photo, that will Only appear in your profile. It's not the picture, that appears beside your posts. That is called your Avatar.
3) If you go to the line Avatar Image, you will see your current avatar, or a black box. click on "selecta a different avatar Image"
4) A window will pop up, showing the available site avatars, that you Can use, but to get your own, got to the botton and put the URL from step 1, into the box, and click the "set URL" button.
5) your avatar picture should not appear in the upper left corner of the window, so hit "select this avatar" and the window will close.
6) Your profile page, should now show your chosen avatar at the Avatar image line.
7) Note, that only new posts, will have this avatar, and older posts with a site avatar, will still have the old one.
