I received a reply from City of Angles.  I had wrote and asked about dealing with customs coming in.

 -----------------------------------------------

 Heather,

How kind and generous!  It isn’t often we run into someone as kind, with not much more than an internet introduction.

First of all, I must apologize, but I will not be in Mexico when you visit.  This is not a problem, only that you may have to deal with a little “language” problem.  I do have one employee who speaks English (Mike), but I cannot promise that he will be available.

The best thing to do is take a taxi to the house where we keep our inventory (house 3; CASA III).  We are right in the middle of town and near all the tourist activities, so I do not think it will be any inconvenience.  Unfortunately, we do not have any other transportation but use taxis ourselves.  When you get there ask for Mike or Alejandra.  I will tell them to watch for you.

 Just tell the taxi driver:

Ciudad de Ángeles (casa hogar para niños)

Avenida 20 circa la esquina con Calle 9

 Numero 781

Es una casa azul con dos pisos.  En el lado derecha de calle.

As far as customs, there is not normally a customs agent at the ferry landing.  If there is, you are allowed to bring in $300 per person duty free.  I’ll also add an attachment here that gives you a map, telephone numbers, and tells a little about bringing things in.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do. . . . and again, thanks very much.

We ended up renting a car for the day to deliver our goods and tour the island.

Unfortunately we were not able to get in touch with City of Angels orphanage.  Nobody on the resort had ever heard of them.  I gave the contact info to guest relations and she tried to call and arrange a visit for drop off.

She was unable to contact them and suggested that we drop our things off at another organization on the island called DIF, which helps families and children in need.

We dropped by and they were very pleased to accept.  I have photos but not digital so I will have to get them developed.

Today I received an email from City of Angels asking about it:

 -------------------------------------------------

 Heather,

I have returned to Cozumel, and it seems that you were unable to visit Ciudad de Ángeles . . . . at least, I haven’t found anyone who hosted you.

I just wanted to check and make sure that your trip went well and that there was no confusion in your logistics or attempts to contact us.  Sometimes, culture and language, work against us to create some unexpected consequences.

We would love to hear from you!

Flopnfly,

Totaly cool that you left your donations at the Federal Mexican Government Department 'Desarrollo Integral de la Familia, DIF' which has done work for decades helping underprivideged Mexican families.

I often wonder what the hook is for foreign entities (US) who have a license to undertake showing that Mexico can't help themselves. Good choice imo.

 cheers,

I received another reply from them:

 ----------------------------------------------
 Heather,

I am sorry that you had difficulty finding us . . . we have never had any problem with people finding us using the map I provided, but these things do happen.  Our biggest problem has been that most of the taxi drivers know about one of our houses (buy not all three) and take people to the wrong location.  We are really hoping to finalize our land purchase this year and get everyone in a single location – that will make things much easier in many areas.

DIF on Cozumel is a great organization and doing a lot of good here.  We collaborate (actually have a contract with them) on many things, and sometimes I feel bad because we actually have more resources than they do, on some items.  So, I am sure your donations will come to good use.

If you are ever in Cozumel again, let us know, and we will try to do a better job of making a visit happen.

 Regards,
