We boarded the plane outside but the airport itself is quite nice, different...there are bars and I believe restaurants inside... a bar for sure, lol.

lol,  yep inside except to actually board the plane, then you go outside.  Its a regular airport except it looks like a huge grass hut, lol.  Its fairly new, I believe.  You'll find the DR abit more "Americanized" than Cuba but not like Mexico.

Bulldog, we were there 2yrs ago and, if I recall correctly, the airport is a large open-air area covered by a huge thatched roof. There is an observation deck on the 2nd floor, and also on the main level there is all the duty free stuff and vendors. There is an air-conditioned bar, but it looked pretty small, and I believe there was a VIP area as well. Last year on our way to Puerto Plata we stopped over in the Punta Cana airport and we were escorted to another roofed-in area that was enclosed and air conditioned too.
Hope this helps. If things have changed, maybe someone can shed some light on this.  :)
ut of my mind. Back in 5 minites.

Its a cute airport.  The only things that are outdoors are the planes!!!!  Probably one of the best airports I have been to in the caribbean. Small but beautifully formed. I particularly remember that the departure lounge was nice and cold whilst we waited for the plane.  All I would warn is that don't wait to get your rum at the airport as it is really expensive.  So much so that I decided it would be just as cheap to buy it at home should my stocks run out.  Stocks have now run low but no worries only 4 days till my hols.  Those cuba libres will just taste all the better for the wait.  :moj:    :moj:

Listen to JJay about the Rum, lol.  I mentioned a store...heres more info.  Shop at Amalia Mercado (grocery store)  Took less than 10 mins to walk there from the Palladium. Make a right up the path towards vendors and then an immediate left. You will find yourself on El Cortecito. A few store fronts later you shall find yourself in front of Amalia. Lots of familiar north american brand items. Cost example, 16 oz vanilla is 30 pesos, approx Cdn $1.00, excellent buy compared to beach vendors. The store accepts pesos and US dollars. I found this in my notes from when we went.

sorry Bulldog, we've only seen the Puerto Plata airport and Santo Domingo Airports in the DR.

Hope you get some good pictures from there and let us know what it's like.

I'm not sure if we'll yak at you before you go, so have a good one, and raise a cervesa (or 4) for us!    :1:    :1:    :1:    :1:

We'll be sure to raise a few for you in Cuba too!

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

These aren't the clearest pics... I took them when I first got off the plane and the humidity fogged up the camera lens, lol.  I've never tried posting pics on here yet but here it goes:
