« on: April 25, 2008, 09:50:32 PM »
The following are all rumrunners post from the recent DCF trip to cuba

Day 1 threw week two

DCF trip to Cuba Days 1 and 2 ( Las Tunis)

Dubois Charitable Foundation Trip to Cuba 2008, Day 1 and 2

We flew with Sunwing into Holguin on March 22 landing at about 8:45.  Had a very pleasant flight with Sunwing, a small glass of Champagne shortly after take off followed by a choice of pasta or chicken and red or white wine.

Upon landing at Holguin, I had a problem with Cuban Immigration. The majority of people who go through the Holguin airport do so on a Tourist Visa but we were traveling on special visas issued by the Cuban embassy in Ottawa.  Well, it seems that Holguin is a training area for immigration officers and the poor young girl on the desk when I went to had no idea what to do with me.  After about 20 min of discussions as to whether we had the correct Visas and convincing them that they were issued by Cuban so if they are wrong it is not our fault, and explaining what we do and why we were there, they finally smiled and let us all through and thanked us for the work we do…. Next time I will not be the first one to go through.  I Should say that the arguing was not done by me as other then ordering drinks my Spanish is limited.

A long very bumpy bus ride to Playa Covarrubias… Road was very bad 2.5 hours to go what should have been just over an hour.  Stayed at Villa Covarrubias s for 2 nights with Sunday being a down day for just relaxing.  Saw a small ( about dinner plate) Ray about 5 ft off the beach and later walking along the shore line came across a fellow spear fishing and he had several fish as well as a large Morey eel.

Tour on Monday was into Las Tunis Visiting 2 Circulo Infantil (Kindergarten/day care Schools) (huge upper) as well as a home for the physically and mentally disabled, some severely, (huge downer) and an Orphanage.

The Kids at the first school put on quite a show for us when we arrived then we talked to the director and the teachers about the things we had sent and what there further needs were. Had a great time with the children… many of them wanted their picture taken and then wanted to see it… it was such fun.  We then went to a second school that was under repair so there were no children there at that time.  These schools are quite different from our Day Cares, in that they are teaching the children life skill already at that age.  They had several areas set up to mimic different parts of life (and so much of it was made out of paper mache) there was a store, complete with produce and a checkout counter and cash register, a kitchen with sink and stove and numerous pots and pans… including a pressure cooker, a small office with paper mache computer and a hospital room with a cot set up and paper mache bottles of Blood and plasma hanging beside it. (These kids will not be afraid if they have to go to the Dr)

At lunch time we visited an Orphanage, which is more like a foster home. There are very few orphanages and orphans in Cuba as when child losses their parents they tend to get cared for by other family members, they only end up in an orphanage if there are no other family members around.

The Orphanage has a Momma and Papa as well as a cook and social worker assigned to it.  The children stay there until the have completed school and some even well beyond that.

We had Lunch served to us in the back yard of the Orphanage and were surprised to see that the Lunch was prepared by the 2 of the chefs from the Villas Covarrubias which was about 1.5 hours away by our bus.  Both of them were on their day off and had volunteered to cook for us.  We were entertained by a band made up of neighbors from the area around the Orphanage. ( as 2 of them were playing Guitars I was able to give them a couple of sets of the Guitar strings that I had taken with me .. they were very thankful, I only wish I had taken a set of strings to the fellow who was playing the bass)

After lunch we visited the Hospital for the physically and mentally handicapped.  They had a wide range of patients from those only moderately affected to many in a vegetative state, this visit had a much different tone to it then at the day care, but it was important to check on the goods we had seen and from the comments of the others who had been there last year there was a huge difference especially in the beds that we sent. We also sent a night table with each bed but the Director explained that the patients  could not us them due to their disabilities, so many were being used in the offices as filing cabinets

Our next stop was a small school for mentally challenged youth located in the country outside of Las Tunas.  These kids also put on a show for us before we look around the school.

I final stop was at a community park to meet the community association, they also put on a show and gave us refreshments.

We then headed off to our next base of operation Santa Lucia, also a very nice resort with a great buffet and several good bars ….  Did not get a chance to check out the beach or pool due to very heavy rain when we got there Just had supper and a few drinks ( Ok quite a few) then off to bed to be ready for the next day.

DCF trip, Day 3 Nuevitas

After spending the night at the Gran Club Santa Lucia we arose to a very good Buffet Breakfast before heading out for our next day.  Day 3 (Tuesday) started with a drive into Nuevitas with our first stop being at a Hospital for the mentally handicapped..  At this location we picked up the local reps of MINVEC and MINSAP. (Ministry of Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation (MINVEC, Cuba), Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP, Cuba),) and as usual they provided us with a “small snack”

From the Hospital we went to a local senior’s home, Hogar de Ancianos Nuevitas, who had received a number of items from us in the last year including many beds and nightstands. We were entertained by 3 residents who sang for us, the first, an 82 year old woman, sang a song in english about how much she loves Fidel. The last picture in this group shows some beds and night tables which we sent down last year.

Our next stop was for lunch at the local “Visitors House” (this is like a small hotel where the local government provides food and lodging for visiting dignitaries or government officials) where they provide a nice lunch for us.

After lunch were went to a local drop in centre for the mentally handicapped (Centro de Salud Mental Nuevitas).  Again we had a show put on, starting with some Children singing for us and followed by a fashion show which we found odd until the director told us that the clothes were all items that we had sent down.  After the show we toured the centre and they showed us the crafts that they do.  The director thanked us for the aid and then we were each presented with a couple of craft items, the ladies in our group received a floral bouquet.

We then returned to the Gran Club St Lucia for the night.

Day 4 Ciego de Avila

Day 4 Ciego de Avila

Day 4 Wednesday begins with a fairly lengthy and some what rough ride to Ciego de Avila.

Arriving at Lunch time at the local Guest house for lunch which was presented on a patio over looking the city, a beautiful spot for Lunch indeed.  Lunch was shared with us buy several government officials including the vice president of the regional Government and the Minister in charge of  donations from North America, who made a change in his plans so he could meet with us on the way back to Havana from some meeting son the east end of the Island..

After lunch we went to the Hospital Psiquiátrico Ciego de Avila, ( physiatric Hospital)

and on to the General hospital there which is undergoing a major renovation.

That night we stayed in the in the Hotel Ciego de Avila, supper was somewhat limited but a good time was had in the bar in the evening where we were joined by a couple of the gov’t reps who had spent the day with us.

Day 5 , Ciego de Avila and Camaguey

Sorry for the delay getting more about the trip posted but have been busy getting caught up at work and working on a kitchen reno for my daughter

Day 5 , Ciego de Avila and Camaguey

Thursday morning we visited a Complejo Gerontológico, senior's home in Ciego de Avila before heading off to Camaguey.

This senior’s home was the recipient of some materials last year including an organ donated by a couple who work with the foundation. The home was very pleased to receive the organ although they have no one there who knows how to play it.  We were able to learn that the Ministry of Culture is sending someone in to teach some of the residents and staff to play it.

This photo shows a couple who met and were married at the home, the gentleman is blind.

A lot of dominos being played here as is the case across Cuba.

Once we moved on to Camaguey we checked into our Hotel, the Plaza located right behind the Camaguey train station.

After having lunch we went to Hogar de Impedidos Físicos y Mentales Camaguey ( hospital for the mentally impaired) and   Hogar de Niños sin amparo filial ( orphanage), ( My battery died on my camera so I did not get many pictures here)

After a shower and change of clothes we were off to the Camaguey Guest House for dinner and  a very pleasant evening. Our hosts presented the Ladies in the group with a statue and the Gentlemen with a bottle of Puerto Principe Rum.

Then back to the hotel.

DCF Trip Day 6 Bayamo

Day 6 Bayamo

Friday morning we moved on to Bayamo in Granma Province.

I was along bus ride to Bayamo from Camaguey.

0242

After checking into our Hotel, The Sierra Maestra, we were off to a seniors home Hogar de Ancianos “Lidia Doce”.

Then on to 2 Orphanages (Hogar de niños sin amparo filial ) the first for Children over 6 years of age.  A mixture of boys and girls here all very friendly to us.:

And the second for those 6 and under, this orphanage had a great group of young boys… interestingly there were no girls here:

After returning to the hotel we found that we had a busload of students from Scotland who were on a History tour of Cuba.

This was a fairly nice hotel but after a torrential downpour one couple of our group found that their room was flooded and after a lot of complaining and being told there were no rooms available, they eventually got moved to a suite.

DCF trip second week , Wednesday Holguin

DCF week 2

Week 2 was mostly spent relaxing on the beach and around the pool at Blau Costa Verde.

This is an excellent resort and we were treated very well… we even had a reserved table in the buffet all week. The highlite for me was that Karen flew in to join us for this part of the trip.

On Wed we were invited by the Mayor of Holguin to visit some institutions in Holguin.

After an introductory meeting with him and some of his staff we visited a seniors home

 and an orphanage.

After completing our visit we did a quick trip to the hill of the cross before heading back to the resort.
