Greece in September?
« on: June 15, 2005, 10:57:00 PM »
Having concentrated mostly on Cuba,Mexico and Central America for our travels in the past few years...I know very little about Europe, etc.
This year our British friends invited us to join them in Greece (we'll be stopping over in England as part of the trip).
Their suggestion was Skiathos,Greece during the month of September (next year...our travel calendar this year is booked)for a couple of weeks.
Has anyone been there?Would appreciate whatever information you can throw my way.
 Thank you.  :)

MCB:

I thought that I should post or else you might think it strange that coming from the UK I might know about all things Greek.

Sorry to disappoint you but the only thing I know about Greece, or the Greek islands, is it was where the film 'Shirley Valentine' was set!!!

However you may find this link helpful:

I'm glad you posted this MCB.

Not that I know anything either   :)    but it is a place we are planning to go to as well.

I realize that Greece doesn't compare to the Caribbean as far as AI resorts go.  But it does have a lot to offer.

 Any info would be appreciated.

Hello bellagio and flopnfly,
Yes, we must cross that "pond" next year (dread that long flight bellagio...know you do it repetively on your Cuban trips but the eight hour plus to South America a few years ago almost did me in)..so
Greece might be a starting point to explore another part of the world.
I did enjoy the film "Shirley Valentine" and the scenery shown was quite beautiful.I'll have to find her "little table" to sit at and sip wine while looking at the sea.
Our Brit friends know we enjoy the all inclusive resorts(so easy on holidays) when we travel but in Greece..think we're going with an apartment and eating meals in different tavernas (restaurants).Certainly will be a change from Cuba.

Haven't been to Skiathos I'm afraid but have been to many other islands and mainland Greece.  The Greeks are lovely people and there are many beautiful islands to visit.  Skiathos I'm sure will be lovely and not too commercialised.  I have been to Kefalonia (lovely island) in September and although the day time temperature was lovely I did find it cooled down quite a bit once 9p.m. arrived so a light sweater/jacket would be appropriate for evenings.  I have never tried AI in Greece as there aren't that many and also the quality is poor compared to carribean AI's.  I usually go self catering and eat out every night.  There are loads of different taverna's and bars to eat at.
The Amstel beer is also good   :1:

Hello JJay,
 Thank you for the information.
How was the food? Since I don't eat lamb or octopus (anywhere in the world)..I envision myself living on feta cheese and fish (yes, some of us Canadians are a "picky lot").
Also, I heard since September is not "high season" some establishments close down...is this true and if so was it an inconvenience to you?
Glad to hear the beer was good.

If you are going to Greece, then September is the perfect time!

My Dad is from Venice Italy, and He and Mom, always go back to Italy for the month of September.

The weather is perfect, not too hot, and never cold, and the majority of the "tourists" are gone, making it an ideal time to visit the tourist sites.

MCB you're correct in saying that September is the end of season but I wouldn't imagine anything will close down until the last week.  Plenty of people from the UK travel to Greece in September.  The food is good and there is plenty of choice.   You just need to find the right taverna.  There's plenty of tavernas but not all are good. I just love greek salads and the swordfish is very good.  Chicken is always on the menu in various different forms. Souvlaki is good (basically a kebab on a skewer) beef, chicken, lamb or pork very nice and usually served with a savoury rice.  You'll find plenty to eat other than lamb.

I'm sure you will love Greece.

Hello JJay,
Appreciate your info.As always, I think we approach a new destination with a sense of adventure and some apprehension.
I usually end up laughing at myself..after I get there..wondering why I worried.
Living in Alberta, I'm certainly looking forward to fresh seafood in Greece.
I know we'll have a great time in Greece..now the wait until next September. This will give me some time to learn a few phrases in Greek.Always like to able to stumble through "Thank you." and "Where is the bathroom?" in any country.  ;)
