Playa Costa Verde vs Playa Pesquero
« on: June 17, 2005, 03:40:00 PM »
Playa Costa Verde and Playa Pesquero gets great reviews, and those who have been love it and keep going back.

I want to know what is it that makes you go back, or want to go back.

The Playa Pesquero basically has everything you could possibly need in a resort hotel at a very reasonable price.  It isn't unashamed luxury but it is a modern hotel, set in wonderfully landscaped surroundings, with a beautiful pool, nice beach, excellent selection of restaurants (7 a la carte and 2 buffet) and a wide assortment of sporting facilities.

Though it is the largest hotel in Cuba you never get the impression that it is overcrowded as it covers such a large area.

We certainly loved the Playa Pesquero, but occupancy was very low when we were there, not so sure how it would be if it was full.

Playa Costa Verde looked a little older and run down to me, I'm just wondering why everybody loves it so much.

From what I've seen of the two Playa Pesquero would be my natural choice, because it's newer, better beach area, more facilities etc.

For us leaving from Toronto the price is about the same for the two resorts.

Well since I haven't been to the PP I can't really compare the resorts, but I think it's the size of the place that "intimidates" me more than anything. It looks absolutely amazing, but so big

I didn't find the pcv run down at all. It's very well maintained, none of the paint on the buildings look faded, everything seems to be in fine working order. I love the size and layout of the pcv as well. Obviously not as many choice of restaurants but some of them are closed during low season anyway aren't they Heather?
During low season, there's not as many people so it's probably not to difficult to get a room fairly central to everything, but I cannot imagine high season and being stuck at one of the block of rooms at the far end of the resort.
And since I go on the "cheap" that's probably where I would end up  :(
I would like to try it though, cuz it does look spectacular.
I love the pcv though and that's where the BIT wants to go back to.

When we got booted out of the PCV last year, due to the water thing, the painters were already standing by, waiting for the guest to leave.

I guess they did a lot of "upgrades" during their forced emptyness

It's difficult for me to compare the two, but I think it would be down to price for me as to which one I would choose to stay at in the future.

I certainly would not pay more to stay at the PCV, but if it was £50 or more cheaper than the PP then I would choose to stay there.   There probably is little to choose between the two, but the PP , being newer, does score on appearance and layout IMHO.

I wasn't totally impressed with the beach at either resort and neither can hold a candle to the beach at Melia, Cayo Santa Maria - now that is what you call a beach!!!

Wendy, the size of Playa Pesquero intimidated me at first too.  It was on the list, and then off again because it was huge.  We ended up biting the bullet and trying it, and we loved it.

It's really only a 5 minute walk from any of the rooms to the lobby, and there are the golf carts going up and down constantly.  The quiet carts I might add, battery powered not fueled.

After being at the PP I think I've been spoiled now.

Speaking of beaches, the beach at any of these resorts doesn't come anywhere near to comparing with the Varadero Beach.  That's the only other one I have to compare it to in Cuba.

Varadero has the WOW factor, best I've seen anywhere.

I'm glad you agree about the beach Heather.   Personally (following the good Pastor's advice with regard to not enthusing about the PP) I have to say I was disappointed in the whole of Pesquero beach, I had expected it to be better.

On points out of 10 I would give Cayo Santa Maria beach 9 - Pesquero beach maybe 6, certainly no more.  What would you score Varadero?

I would give Varadero a 9.5 and PP a 5, based on white sandy beach, clear water and swimming area.

Some people like the rocks and coral right on shore so they might enjoy the  PP beach better and find Varadero boring.

I sure don't.  White sand, turquoise water, no rocks or coral on the beach and until at least 100 yards out to sea.  That's my sort of beach, and as I'm going off to bed right now, it's the sort of beach that I'll be dreaming about.

 Goodnight all.

and Barcelo Cayo Largo ( would not recommend to anyone ...would never return to that hotel)

I've only watched the ones of the playa costa verde so far and they are amazing !!!  Well done.

It makes me want to go there now.

That looks to be my favoured resort also.  Nov 2nd and Nov 16th flights with First Choice and Nov 10th with Thomas Cook.

Unfortunately Thomas Cook are more expensive by nearly £100 - plus they don't fly direct, only via Varadero.

However these are only online prices - I haven't done any phoning around yet - waiting for more info from you guys.
