Sports gear

Up to now sports gear as been carried free on airlines, it seems things are about to change no doubt other airlines will implement these charges

Please be advised that from Tuesday 13 September 2005 Monarch Scheduled will be starting to charge a nominal fee for the carriage of sports equipment on board our flights.

The fee of 10GBP / 15EUR per person, per flight covers you for carriage of up to 13kg of sports equipment (including golf clubs, bicycles, skis, bowls and diving equipment).  Any equipment weighing more than 13kg will be subject to excess baggage charges of 4GBP  / 6EUR per kg as normal.  All sports equipment is also carried subject to load and there being space available.

As charges like this become commonplace within our industry, we felt that not implementing a similar measure ourselves would undoubtedly affect our ability to maintain the lowest fares on all flights.  We are confident that our fee is competitive and offers a good value equipment allowance for our sporting passengers.

The fees are payable at the Monarch Scheduled ticket desk after check in, or for new bookings made on flymonarch.com after 13 September 2005 you can pre-pay online at the time of booking.

hmmmm

I wonder if the same thing will happen on this side of the pond?
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

I think this is a fair deal to be honest and should be adopted by every airline. I usually pay a lot more to take my diving gear away with me and would be happy to pay £10 for an additional 13kg of diving gear.

For some reason, Golfers have always had an easy ride, a massive golf bag laden with clubs always goes on for free, yet I end up paying for my diving equipment everytime. I think the golfing community will be more pissed with this then the divers!
