Emerg. Q re/ ID required for DR
« on: December 30, 2005, 10:18:00 PM »
I hope a seasoned DR traveller can help out here...an acquaintance of mine is scheduled to leave for Puerto Plata next week (Jan. 8th) and has just discovered that her birth Cert. is missing (she doesn't have a passport).  She is searching in vain for the birth cert. as I write this, but I'm just wondering what if anything can be done to expedite obtaining another copy.  She was born out of province, so we'd be dealing with a different Ministry office.

 Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

 Thanks.

Hi Sunluvr,

You didn't say which province she was born in, but this site should have some information.

I know in Toronto you can go into the office and get a replacement the same day if it's an emergency.

check out this site, hopefully it helps.

Thank you so much Heather!  She was born in Newfoundland.  If their offices are like here, they won't be opening till the 2nd, so I'll fwd her the link ....worst case if the doc doesn't reappear, it might cost a few $$ to ship another one here, but it's better than losing out on the trip all together!

 Thanks for the quick response!

Keep us posted on whether she gets it in time.

All she needs for getting into the DR is a birth certificate and Photo ID.  Drivers licence and health card with photo are accepted.

I would recommend that everybody get a passport for travel these days.  It's still the best proof of Canadian Citizenship.

No kidding.  I reprimanded her for being such a slacker with regard to the ID...hindsight, of course.  She has been told already that she needs the Birth Cert. or forget it.  She has other photo ID but it's not good enough on its own.  I'm still hopeful that the original will pop up out of nowhere...it's a matter of misplacement and I think she just needs to do a good house cleaning!

This trip cost her over $1200.00 for a week, and she's sharing a room!  She got seriously hosed, methinks, but that's a whole other story.  No cancellation ins. either, though I'm not sure how beneficial it would be in this sort of an instance.  Is there coverage for being a "Dumb blonde"??  LOL

I'll be talking with her Monday, though Gov't offices won't be open till Tues.  She has a cpl relatives from Ontario visiting out there right now, so there's a chance someone might be able to obtain a copy and bring it back by the 8th.  Stay tuned!

Well it looks like my little pal will be DR bound on Sunday!  She was able to locate the long form of her birth certificate and her travel agent confirmed that it will be acceptable, accompanied by her photo ID.

Fingers crossed she'll be okay.   :)

That's great news Sunluvr.

Is she going to apply for a passport when she gets back?     :D

Good Q Heather, it's really hard to say if she'll heed the advice, she's young and probably has better things to spend her $ on!   :D

I can't understand why anyone would go without a passport these days.  I was so annoyed when i went to the DR.  Everyone with a passport cruised on thru, and the people with other ID had their ID scrutinized and were questioned.  There is no ID like a passport.  Definitely a must (and soon will be a must for the USA).

Twice now we have taken my daughters friend with us and she doesn't have a passport.  I even went as far as getting her the form, but she didn't apply.
both times we ended up going to the DR because they allow you in without a passport.  I've warned her that she better have one for the next time or she's not going.
