Last week four shark attacks took place in Sharm, I read that a couple of Russian divers had their arms bitten off so they were quite serious. Sharm and the Red Sea is probably the number one diving place in the world for Brits and Europeans and large Oceanic White Tips are frequently seen, although they never attack divers. I would guess there is either an injured or elderly shark that is unable to hunt it's natural prey in the area and is now feeding on divers.

I hope they do not go over the top and start killing every shark that they see in the waters around Sharm. They have already claimed to of killed the shark responsible prior to yesterdays killing, however, none of the sharks caught were Oceanic White Tips.

How awful, and I agree that it was probably a weaker or injured shark.

If there are other sharks in the area do they join in when they spot the blood in the water?

I wouldn't of thought so, shark attacks like this are really rare and as humans, we are not part of their natural food chain. Most of the sharks, especially the Oceanic Whitetips should have moved further South by now, down to the Sudan area of the Red Sea. The water temp around Sharm would be around 21C this time of year which they prefer warmer waters, so they migrate a little way further South....hence probably another reason to think this is a roque shark that is maybe to weak or injured to make this journey.

We will see how the Egyptians deal with this, the diving community is massive in this area so they will have to be seen to be making the correct decisions in an ecological marine preservation way whilst also protecting the normal people wishing to vacation in this area.

Read it this morning, that there is a "typical over-reaction".  All watersports are cancelled and the beaches are closed at the tourist resorts.

In a rather strange twist, an Egyptian official has claimed the shark responsible for recent attacks in Sharm El Sheikh could have been sent by Mossad, the Israeli Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations.

For those not adept in history, aside from numerous wars there is a constant state of Arab-Israeli tension. Saying there is "no love loss" would be an understatement.

On a personal note, last time I was in Egypt, discussing politics with a local, I was told that "everytime Egypt starts doing well, Israel does something to sabotage it". This is the same story that Egypt is trying to spin now, which on the face of it - seems quite ridiculous.

There have been several speculations by marine biologists investigating the attacks that the shark responsible may be injured and its damanged sensory organs make it unable to distinguish between humans and its usual fish prey, although there is no conclusive proof of this, as the shark has not been captured.

Mohamed Abdel Fadil Shousha, the regional governor said: "What is being said about the Mossad throwing the deadly shark in the sea to hit tourism in Egypt is not out of the question. But it needs time to confirm."

These first reports were made by The Sun newspaper in the UK. For those international readers of TheScubaSite, The Sun is widely considered a "rag" tabloid paper that has a history of embellishing stories, or just plain making shit up. So it is likely that spies planting a killer shark in a tourist resort is in their opinion, just a more interesting story. It was The Sun that brought us excellent, factual scuba diving stories such as how Katie Price's breasts might explode if she goes scuba diving.

Wouldn't it be great......commando style elite killer trained sharks on operations around our coast lines, sniper Moray Eels, suicide bombing turtles, the possibilites are endless....I think you might see your diving insurance premiums go through the roof.
