New Dive Camera
« on: March 15, 2012, 03:54:40 PM »
My new dive camera arrived today, Canon G1X and the WP-DC44 housing. The housing and camera are much bigger than the S90 I am currently using, even with the wide angle wet lenses, which I am hoping Canon will eventually release the adaptor to fit my new housing so I don't have to replace the lenses, as these are big bucks.

The G1X has split reviews, mainly around it's complete lack of macro capabilities and also the sluggish AF. I have now tested the camera (not in water) and both are valid points. The macro side of things on the G1X is terrible, almost non existant, where as the AF is not so much of a problem for me, as it locks in approx a second (which apparently is slow to a professional but should be OK).

For me, it's about image quality and it's low light shooting under water, which this is the cameras strong points due to an almost DSLR sized sensor installed. Not sure what to expect from it (from all the SCUBA forums I frequent, no one has used one whilst diving, so I have nothing to compare it with).....but, I leave for the Maldives next week and will see how it manages once in the water.

I will be taking my old beloved S90 with me, as I have two double stacked macro lenses for it and a super wide lens, so for the time being I will take both cameras on each dive until I can fit these lenses to my new housing.

The housing....it's bloody big !

My S90 with wide angle lens attached....hopefully this will eventually fit the above

I will post the results and how it handles when I get back.....
