TS Chris threatens to become hurricane
Caribbean islands under hurricane watch
Tropical Storm Chris was sweeping Thursday through the eastern Caribbean, forcing cruise ships to change course and tourists to evacuate small islands off the coast of Puerto Rico as it threatened to become the first hurricane of the Atlantic season.
At 2 a.m. EDT Thursday, the center of the storm was about 115 miles (185 kilometers) north-northeast of San Juan. Chris was moving west near 11 mph (18 km/h) and its center was expected to stay north of Puerto Rico.
The storm had top sustained winds of 55 mph (88 km/h), down 5 mph (8 km/h) from three hours earlier. Outer bands of the swirling storm began to dump heavy rains on the U.S. Virgin Islands
