Rescue Diver
« on: January 03, 2010, 12:18:44 AM »
Just sent an email to Resort Divers, where I did my original Open Water Cert. to see if they cover the Trelawny.

As long as Logan will be busy with the Circus school, and the water slides, I'm hoping to be diving alot anyway, so why not do the course?

If it works out, I can contact Pepi at Adventure Divers, do the book work before I leave, and get a referral to do the dives in Jamaica.

That sounds good, but I'm not sure that it's the same dive operation, however Trelawny has a dive shop on site so weather permitting you will be able to take the course.

There are a lot of dive shops in Montego Bay, and if you wanted to you could always get a cab into town to do your course.

Yes, I got a email with a contact number.

I haven't checked into the on-site yet.  I guess I'll just wait til I get there, and see what happens.

Resort Divers is the onsite Dive Op at Trelawny?

Hopefully you get good diving weather for your week.

What is involved with the Rescue course?  Have you done the classroom work, first aid etc at home and then just do the dives in Jamaica?

What is involved with the Rescue course?

What You Learn
Self rescue
Recognizing and managing stress in other divers
Emergency management and equipment
Rescuing panicked divers
Rescuing unresponsive divers

This is a big course if you would be trying to fit it in within a weeks holiday, to be honest, I would think twice !! This would leave you with little, or no time for relaxing and enjoying your weeks vacation.

There are 5 open water sessions (acting out scenario's, ie:removing yours and an unresponsive divers kit whilst giving mouth to mouth on the surface, bringing an unresponsive diver to the surface from the sea bed in a controlled ascent etc), plus 5 pretty intense knowledge development sessions, and then a final exam on top of that. It's pretty tough going to complete this course within a week, let alone when trying to enjoy a relaxing holiday with the family.

If I was you Gambitt, I would go and enjoy a relaxing time, have fun diving and think about doing the the Rescue Course when you get home. (I can mail you some additional information regarding the Rescue Course from the PADI professionals site if you think that would be any help.....PM or let me know if this would be any help to you).

Have a great vacation whatever your decision !

Sorry, as an after thought, you will also need to complete the Emergency First Response course as well unless you already have a recognised qualification in CPR and First Aid that has been completed within the last 2 years.

PS808, that's great info   :icon_thumright:

The rescue course sounds like a course that every diver should do, if for nothing else but to give you the confidence that you can react positively in an emergency situation.

Hi Heather

It really is a worth while course to do and will bring on your skills and confidence in diving onto the next level. To be really honest, I would avoid taking more specialised courses whilst on holiday. I have seen many Rescue courses completed by divers whilst 'on vacation' and the quality of the course is very diluted, and the actual skills are just skimmed over or even sections  completely missed.

I am not saying every dive op in the world are like this, but when your having to teach big courses like a Rescue Course on a very tight timescale, still have Dive Masters to spare for taking customers diving and also completing Open Water courses etc, then the actual intructor to student time for teaching is very small. It's inevitable that the instructor will just try and get the student through the course as they know you will be out of there in a few days and they will want the $$$$'s...PADI is a business at the end of the day..(Put Another Dollar In)

I really belive that if the course in conducted via your local dive shop/instructor at home, you will get a much higher standard of course and instruction. If there is one course thats worth doing properly then it is the Rescue Course ! This is just my own, personal opinion and others may disagree, at the end of the day, you pay your money and you take your chances.

Thanks So much , Pacific State!  :salute: :salute:  That's Great Information, and I would indeed appreciate anything else you'd care to pass on.

I'll PM you my email, so you can send it direct.

I'm going to take your advise, and wait til this summer to do the course.   :happy3:  I do already have my EFR from St. John Ambulance, (needed for Hockey Trainer) so at least that part is covered.

Cheers

Gambitt
